Basically, proof that ground chicken does not have to taste like “healthy sadness.”

Ground chicken (or minced chicken) is one of those ingredients that quietly saves dinner over and over again. It cooks quickly, takes on bold flavors like a champ, and works across basically every cuisine — garlic, ginger, taco seasoning, gochujang, fresh herbs. It plays well with everything.

The “bland” reputation? Mostly a seasoning problem. A little soy sauce, Parmesan, pesto, or a generous handful of garlic and spices can completely transform ground chicken into something people actually get excited about. No sad dry chicken vibes here.

This roundup covers a lot of ground (pun intended) — quick stir-fries and saucy noodle dishes, juicy meatballs in every flavour direction, rice bowls and salad bowls, Tex-Mex classics, hearty pastas, and cozy soups and chilis. Some recipes are veggie-packed and lighter, others are rich and satisfying, and quite a few bring serious heat — because it turns out ground chicken loves a spicy moment.

Our family makes this ground turkey tacos recipe almost weekly! We all love it, and it takes less than 30 minutes. A true weeknight meal!

Ground Turkey Tacos

Like many of you, I’m always looking for fast weeknight meals that feel put together. These quick turkey tacos made with ground turkey are one of my go-tos. The taco seasoning is made with spices I always have in my pantry, so I don’t have to think twice when it’s time to make them.

The turkey cooks up in under 20 minutes. All that’s left is to warm some tortillas, pile on your favorite toppings, and dinner is ready. This is honestly one of the recipes we make the most. If you love tacos as much as we do, check out our ground beef tacos and pork tacos.

Key Ingredients

  • Taco Seasoning: I know you can buy packets at the store, but I much prefer our taco spice blend below. You’ll combine chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, oregano, and salt together. Another option is to use this homemade taco seasoning, which makes a larger batch and has a few optional ingredients for added flavor.
  • Ground Turkey: I like to use ground turkey with at least 7% fat for these tacos. If you go with a leaner package, it can get a little dry. You can substitute ground chicken without any changes, and if you want to add veggies, see our taco meat recipe for tips.
  • Tomato Paste and Stock: These make the taco mixture richer and more flavorful.  I like vegetable broth, tomato broth, or chicken stock. You only need ½ cup, so use whatever you have (water will work in a pinch, too).
  • Tortillas: Use whatever tortillas you love best. Homemade tortillas are always a treat, and if you want to try making them, we have recipes for both corn tortillas and flour tortillas.
  • Taco Toppings: These are your tacos, so go wild with your favorites! In our house, we switch it up between lettuce, cabbage, tomato, avocado (sliced or mashed), sour cream with a squeeze of lime, and pickled red onions. Cheese is always a hit, too.

How to Make Turkey Tacos

Tip 1: Make our homemade spice mix. If you’ve been around here for a while, you know we love our homemade taco seasoning. If you’re new, trust me. Skip the store-bought packets and mix up your own with chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, and salt. It makes all the difference.

Tip 2: Brown the turkey. Let your ground turkey get a little color and a few crispy edges. I like to press the turkey down in the skillet and let it hang out for a minute before breaking it up. Sprinkle in your spice mix, then use a wooden spoon to break it up into crumbles. A heavy skillet (cast iron is my go-to) works wonders here. I do the same thing when I make our beef tacos.

Tip 3: Finish with tomato paste and stock. This is the secret to juicy, flavorful taco meat. Once your turkey is browned and crumbly, stir in a spoonful of tomato paste and a splash of stock. Let it bubble away for a minute or two, and you’re all set to build your tacos!

Tip 4: Warm your tortillas. My favorite way is to toast them one at a time over the gas burner until they’re soft with a few charred spots. If you don’t have a gas burner, just heat them in a hot pan until they’re warm and still soft. Stack them up and wrap in a clean dish towel until you’re ready to eat.

Serving Suggestions

I’m sure you already have favorite toppings for tacos, but here are a few more ideas from our kitchen. We love stuffing tortillas with all the toppings. The options are endless! Here are some of our go-tos:

For sides, we love rice and beans. Here are our recipes for Mexican rice, saffron rice, and cilantro lime rice. Plus, two recipes for beans: refried beans or these saucy black beans. And if you want dinner to feel like your favorite Tex-Mex restaurant, try homemade salsa with tortilla chips.

In these turkey tacos, we use our family’s favorite taco meat recipe, but swap ground beef for ground turkey. These turn out best when made with ground turkey that has at least 7% fat. To make them really special, try homemade tortillas. Here’s our recipes for flour tortillas and corn tortillas.

4 Servings

You Will Need

1 ½ teaspoons chili powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon dried oregano

¾ teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more as needed

1 ½ tablespoons avocado oil

1 pound ground turkey, 93/7 (450 g)

2 tablespoons tomato paste (35 g)

½ cup chicken stock or water

8 flour tortillas or corn tortillas, warmed over a gas burner or in a skillet

Favorite taco toppings like cheese, cabbage, avocado, sour cream, pickled onions, pico de gallo, roasted tomatillo salsa, lime wedges, or hot sauce

Directions

1Make spice mix: In a small bowl, stir together the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, and salt.

2Cook the taco meat: Heat the avocado oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and sprinkle the spice mixture over it. Use a wooden spoon to break up the meat as it cooks, stirring until it begins to brown.

3Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 more minutes. Add the chicken stock (or water) and simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens. Taste, then add more salt if you think it needs it.

4Warm tortillas: For a gas burner, turn the burner to medium, place the tortilla over the flame, and heat through. When it starts to blister a bit, flip and warm the second side. Continue with the remaining tortillas. Alternatively, to warm in a skillet, place a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, add the tortillas (one at a time), and cook until warm, soft, and toasty. Keep warmed tortillas wrapped in a clean dish towel to keep them warm.

5Build tacos: Divide the turkey between warmed tortillas and top with your favorite taco toppings.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Make-ahead: Make the turkey mixture up to 4 days in advance. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat before serving. Adding a tablespoon or two of additional stock or water helps to moisten the meat.
  • Making thinned sour cream: To make it drizzleable, stir 2 tablespoons of sour cream with a teaspoon or two of fresh lime juice, then add a pinch of salt.

My family’s best beef taco recipe calls for lean ground beef and a simple blend of pantry spices. One of my favorite 20-minute dinners, and the entire family loves it!

Ground Beef Tacos

These easy beef tacos are a weeknight favorite at our house. We use our go-to taco meat recipe with lean ground beef and a handful of pantry spices. It’s quick, simple, and so much better than anything you’d get from a store-bought seasoning packet.

Adam and I both love tacos for dinner, but it wasn’t until our son really fell for this taco recipe that we started making it on repeat. I love the spiced beef mixture tucked into corn tortillas and top it with whatever I happen to have on hand. Sour cream, lettuce, cabbage, pico de gallo, guacamole, avocado, you name it. They all work!

Key Ingredients

  • Taco Seasoning: I know you can buy packets at the store, but I much prefer our taco spice blend below. You’ll combine chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, oregano, and salt together. Another option is to use this homemade taco seasoning, which makes a larger batch and adds a few optionals ingredients for flavor.
  • Ground Beef: I like to use lean ground beef (90/10 or 10% fat) for these tacos. If you go with a fattier beef, it can get a little greasy. You can substitute other ground meat in this taco recipe (we swap in chicken or turkey all the time, see our ground turkey tacos as an example). For shredded beef, see our shredded beef tacos or beef birria, which you can turn into birria tacos.
  • Veggies: Totally optional, but if I have chopped onion or Anaheim pepper hanging out in the fridge, I toss them in the skillet. They add a little extra texture, and I love how sweet they get once they’re cooked.
  • Tomato Paste and Stock: These make the beef mixture richer and more flavorful.  I like vegetable broth, tomato broth, beef stock, or chicken stock. You only need 1/2 cup, so use whatever you have (water will work in a pinch, too).
  • Tortillas: Use whatever tortillas you love best. Homemade tortillas are always a treat, and if you want to try making them, we have recipes for both corn tortillas and flour tortillas.
  • Taco Toppings: These are your tacos, so go wild with your favorites! In our house, we switch it up between lettuce, cabbage, tomato, avocado (sliced or mashed), sour cream with a squeeze of lime, and pickled onions. Cheese is always a hit, and you can’t go wrong with classic chopped onion.

How to Make the Best Beef Tacos

Tip 1: Make our homemade spice mix. Skip the packets at the store. Our simple taco seasoning calls for spices you likely already have on hand. You’ll stir together chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, and salt.

Tip 2: Brown the beef. For the best flavor and texture, let your ground beef get a little color and crispy edges. I like to press it down in the skillet and let it sit for a minute before breaking it up. Add your spice mix, then use a wooden spoon to crumble the meat. A heavy skillet, like a cast-iron skillet, works great here. I do the same when making our ground pork tacos.

Browning lean ground beef with taco seasoning for tacos

Tip 3: Add extra veggies if you have them. I don’t always do this, but when there’s onion or Anaheim pepper in the fridge, I toss them in with the meat. They get soft and sweet, and it’s so good with all the spices.

Adding onion and chopped Anaheim pepper to spice ground beef for beef tacos

Tip 4: Finish with tomato paste and stock. This is what brings everything together and keeps the taco meat juicy. Stir in a spoonful of tomato paste, then add a splash of stock. Let it simmer, and you’re ready to build your tacos!

Pouring stock into a skillet with spiced ground beef for taco meat

Tip 5: Warm your tortillas. I love using my gas burner to toast tortillas one at a time over the flame. They get soft with a few charred spots, which taste amazing. If you don’t have a gas burner, heat them in a hot pan until they’re warm but still soft. Stack them up and wrap in a clean dishcloth until you’re ready to eat.

Serving Suggestions

I’m sure you already have your own favorite way to build beef tacos, but here are a few more ideas from our kitchen. We love stuffing tortillas with all the toppings. The options are endless! Here are some of our go-tos:

  • Mexican Rice or Cilantro Lime Rice
  • Refried Beans, Refried Black Beans, or these saucy Black Beans
  • Sliced or mashed avocado or Guacamole
  • Shredded cheese, crumbled queso fresco, or cojita cheese
  • Chopped fresh tomatoes, Pico de Gallo, or Roasted Tomato Salsa
  • Salsa with Tortilla Chips
  • Raw onions, Pickled Onions, or Cowboy Candy (Candied Jalapeños)
  • Cilantro Lime Slaw, fresh sliced cabbage, or crunchy lettuce
  • Sour cream thinned with fresh lime juice and seasoned with a pinch of salt.
  • Homemade Ranch Dressing or Cilantro Lime Dressing (my favorite for taco salad)

This is my family’s go-to beef taco recipe. We’ve called for lean ground beef below and prefer this when made with ground meat that has a little fat (7% to 10% is perfect). Lentil Soup with Ground Beef is a tasty soup that’s made with brown rice and it’s easy enough to make for a work-night dinner! If you prefer a lower-carb soup, make this soup with cauliflower rice or check out Instant Pot Hamburger Soup (with Cauliflower)  for a low-carb soup with similar flavors.

PIN Lentil Soup with Ground Beef to try it later!

Lentil Soup with Ground Beef in serving bowl.

I first made this Lentil Soup with Ground Beef years ago on a day I was too sick to go the store, and I don’t think there’s anything that tastes as good or as comforting as soup when you’re not feeling great and it’s cold outside. Then on a day that was soup weather again, I made this soup, took some better photos, and enjoyed it that night for dinner.

A lot of the good flavor in this lentil soup recipe comes from the homemade beef stock and homemade chicken stock I always try to have in the freezer, but even if you use canned beef broth and canned chicken broth this will still be delicious. Use the low salt version if you used canned broth, and don’t get in too much of a hurry and shorten the simmering time, because that’s another step that builds flavor.

I did add some balsamic vinegar to the finished soup this time, and I loved the way it perked up the flavor so I’m updating the recipe to include that. And this soup uses the kind of ingredients many people always have in the pantry, so it might become one of your favorites.

What ingredients do you need for this recipe?

(This is only a list of ingredients; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

What are lentils?

Lentils (also called pulses in some parts of the world) are the dried seeds of the lentil plant, and they are a legume. They’re never eaten fresh but always dried after ripening. Here is more information about lentils, including examples of different types.

What kind of lentils did I use in the Lentil Soup with Ground Beef?

I used ordinary brown lentils (affiliate link) for this recipe, which are probably the most common kind. However in some soups I love to use red lentils that will dissolve more into the soup, and I think various types of lentils are pretty interchangeable in recipes.

How to make a ground beef lentil soup that’s lower in carbs?

You might be surprised if you check the nutritional information because this soup only has 11 net carbs per serving. But if a soup with both lentils and brown rice seems too high in carbs for you, just replace the brown rice with about 1 1/2 cups frozen cauliflower rice.

How to make Lentil Soup with Ground Beef:

(This is only a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

  1. If you buy lentils in bulk, they may need to be rinsed.
  2. Heat a small amount of olive oil and cook the ground beef until it’s nicely browned.
  3. Move ground beef to soup pot.
  4. Heat more olive oil and cook the onions and celery until they’re starting to soften.
  5. Then add the garlic, dried thyme, ground cumin, and dried parsley and saute a couple of minutes more.
  6. Add the vegetables to the soup pot with the ground beef and rinse out the frying pan with 2 cups water and add to the soup.
  7. Add beef stock or broth, chicken stock or broth, lentils, and chopped carrots and let the soup cook at a very low simmer for about 60 minutes, or until lentils are tender.
  8. When the lentils are tender, add a bit more water if needed and then add the rice (or cauliflower rice) and cook 30-40 minutes more, or until the rice is done.
  9. Season to taste with salt and fresh ground black pepper, stir in balsamic vinegar if desired, and serve hot.

  1. Heat 1 tsp. olive oil in heavy frying pan, add ground beef and cook until meat is well browned, using a turner to break up into small pieces.
  2. Remove meat to heavy soup pot.
  3. Add another tsp. olive oil to frying pan and add onions and celery and cook 3-5 minutes, until vegetables are starting to soften.
  4. Add garlic, dried thyme, ground cumin, and dried parsley and saute 1-2 minutes more.
  5. Add vegetables to soup pot with meat, and rinse out frying pan with the 2 cups of water and add to soup pot.
  6. Add beef stock, chicken stock, lentils, and chopped carrots to pot and cook at a very low simmer about 60 minutes, or until lentils are quite soft.
  7. Taste soup and decide whether to add a small amount of water. (There should be quite a bit of liquid, and the broth should be flavorful but not too strong tasting. If there isn’t very much liquid or broth seems too strong add more water at this point.)
  8. Add brown rice and continue to simmer soup 30-40 more minutes, or until rice is done but still a bit chewy.
  9. Season to taste with salt and fresh ground black pepper (I did not add salt.)
  10. Stir in balsamic vinegar if desired.   Serve hot.

Notes

I would always use homemade beef stock and homemade chicken stock in soup if I have some, but canned broth will also be delicious.

This soup freezes well. You may need to add more liquid when the soup is reheated, because some will be absorbed by the rice.

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
This soup doesn’t have that much lentils or brown rice so it only has 11 net carbs per serving, but use cauliflower rice if you prefer. If you’re a South Beach Dieter, be sure to use low fat ground beef, and the use of carrots and brown rice would make this Lentil Soup with Ground Beef limited to phase 2 or 3 of the original South Beach Diet.

Slow Cooker Ground Turkey Soup https://recipeprofessional.com/slow-cooker-ground-turkey-soup/ https://recipeprofessional.com/slow-cooker-ground-turkey-soup/#respond Tue, 17 Mar 2026 17:41:32 +0000 https://recipeprofessional.com/slow-cooker-ground-turkey-soup/

This slightly-spicy Slow Cooker Ground Turkey Soup has pinto beans, peppers, chiles, and Green Chile Enchilada sauce for extra flavor! See tips in the post for making a version of this soup with even fewer carbs.

Square image for Slow Cooker Ground Turkey Soup shown in bowl with grated cheese in back.

Lately I find myself grabbing a few cans of Hatch Green Chile Enchilada Sauce whenever I’m at the grocery store, and when I wanted to spice up this Slow Cooker Ground Turkey Soup the Hatch Enchilada Sauce plus a can of diced green chiles gave me just the right amount of heat. (And just in case anyone is wondering, Hatch company hasn’t paid me to mention their Green Chile Enchilada Sauce, I just love it!)

I loved the soup with a little grated cheese sprinkled on top, and for those who’d like even more heat, Green Tabasco Sauce is the perfect thing to add to your soup at the table. And I know some people want those slow cooker recipes that can cook all day on low, but when you haven’t planned ahead, this is something you can throw together in the afternoon and after a few hours on high, you have a delicious dinner.

I cooked my soup for 3 hours on high (and another hour or so wouldn’t hurt), but if you need more time than that, 6-8 hours on low would also work just fine.

What ingredients do you need for this recipe?

(This is only a list of ingredients; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

How can you make the ground turkey soup lower in carbs?

You could use more turkey and skip the beans to make this a low-carb soup, or replace the beans with 1-2 cups of cauliflower rice added a few hours into the cooking time. (If you like the idea of using cauliflower rice, you might want to check out Green Chile Turkey Enchilada Soup which is a similar soup made in the Instant Pot that has the option of replacing the beans with cauliflower rice.)

What size slow cooker did I use?

I used a 3.5 Quart Slow Cooker (affiliate link) for this recipe.

How to make Slow Cooker Ground Turkey Soup :

(This is only a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

  1. Heat a little oil in frying pan, brown the ground turkey very well; then add turkey to the slow cooker. (Browning adds flavor for slow cooker dishes, so don’t rush this step.)
  2. Add more oil and cook the onions for about 5 minutes, or until they’re pretty well softened; then add the Ancho chile powder, ground cumin, and dried Mexican oregano and cook about a minute more. Add the onion mixture to the slow cooker.
  3. Rinse the pinto beans until no more foam appears, and add to the slow cooker. (This removes the salt and makes the beans a little easier to digest.)
  4. Add the finely chopped red bell pepper, Hatch Green Chile Enchilada Sauce (affiliate link), diced green chiles (affiliate link), and chicken broth or homemade chicken stock. If you need gluten-free, be sure to use a brand of green chile enchilada sauce that’s gluten free.
  5. Cook the soup for 3-4 hours on high (or 6-8 hours on low).
  6. Serve hot, with grated cheese and Green Tabasco Sauce (affiliate link) to add at the table.

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
Since this Slow Cooker Ground Turkey Soup has pinto beans, it’s probably too high in carbs for strict low-carb diets, but you could double the turkey and skip the beans or replace beans with a few cups of cauliflower rice for a low-carb version. With lean ground turkey and low-fat cheese, the soup is good for any phase of the original South Beach Diet. (The green chile enchilada sauce does contain a small amount of cornstarch and sugar, but the amount per serving is very small.)

Hummus with Spiced Ground Beef Recipe https://recipeprofessional.com/hummus-with-spiced-ground-beef-recipe/ https://recipeprofessional.com/hummus-with-spiced-ground-beef-recipe/#respond Sat, 24 Jan 2026 12:22:07 +0000 https://recipeprofessional.com/hummus-with-spiced-ground-beef-recipe/

This creamy hummus with spiced ground beef, feta cheese, and fresh mint is absolutely delicious! It’s the perfect appetizer or turn it into a light, high-protein meal.

Hummus with Spiced Ground Beef

Our long-time readers know how much we love our recipe for homemade hummus (shared many years ago). We’re always on the lookout for new ways to enjoy it, which is where this hummus with ground beef recipe came from.

We take hummus and pile on lots of spiced ground beef, crumbled feta cheese, and fresh mint. It’s extra tasty, easy to do, and works really well with homemade pita bread, this quicker flatbread, or served on top of salad for a light protein-forward meal.

Key Ingredients

  • Hummus: I highly recommend our simple hummus recipe, but feel free to use your favorite store-bought brand.
  • Ground Beef: Look for ground beef with some fat (85/15 or close to it is perfect). Ground lamb is also excellent.
  • Spices: We’re going for a Middle-Eastern vibe with the spice mixture, so you’ll combine cumin, cinnamon, cayenne, coriander, and allspice. These make the beef really delicious with an almost intoxicating warm spice.
  • Broth: Use beef stock, chicken stock, veggie stock, or, if you are in a pinch, water. We just need a little liquid to make our beef juicier.
  • Feta and Mint: I love the salty pop of feta cheese and the fresh flavor of mint. That said, you could skip this altogether and add a spoonful of homemade tzatziki sauce on top, instead.

Find the full recipe with measurements below.

My Tips for Making Hummus with Spiced Beef

Tip 1: Don’t miss the opportunity to brown your beef. When cooking ground beef, I like to press it down into my skillet and resist the urge to stir it until the bottom is nicely browned. When it is, I stir and add my spice mixture.

Tip 2: Season the beef really well. Think of the ground beef as a topper to the hummus, so it’s okay if it’s very well seasoned. That’s a good thing. You’ll likely be enjoying this with flatbread and scooping up some of the hummus with the beef for each bite, so while the meat on its own may seem too seasoned, once it’s all put together, it works.

And there you go! If you want more ways to spice up hummus, see our roasted red pepper hummus (a reader favorite!).

This hummus with spiced beef is seriously delicious. You can buy your hummus or make our simple hummus recipe. It only takes about 10 minutes and tastes better than store-bought. Feel free to substitute the ground beef in our recipe below for ground lamb. I especially love this with our soft and fluffy pita bread!

6 Servings

You Will Need

1 batch homemade hummus or 2 cups store-bought hummus

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 pound ground beef, we prefer 85/15 (450g)

1/4 cup beef stock, chicken stock, or water (60ml)

2 tablespoons chopped mint leaves

1 ounce crumbled feta cheese (28g)

Directions

1Make the spice mixture: In a small bowl, whisk the cumin, coriander, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne, and salt together.

2Brown the beef: Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. When it is hot, add the olive oil, and then press the beef down into the pan. Cook, without disturbing it, until browned on one side, about 8 minutes. Break the beef up, then stir in the spice mixture and continue for 2 minutes. Pour in the stock and cook until reduced and the beef is cooked, about 5 minutes more.

3To serve: Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl, top with the spiced ground beef, and finish by sprinkling over the mint and feta cheese.

Thai-Style Ground Turkey and Green Beans {20-Minute Meal} https://recipeprofessional.com/thai-style-ground-turkey-and-green-beans-20-minute-meal/ https://recipeprofessional.com/thai-style-ground-turkey-and-green-beans-20-minute-meal/#respond Fri, 16 Jan 2026 10:38:08 +0000 https://recipeprofessional.com/thai-style-ground-turkey-and-green-beans-20-minute-meal/

Flavorful and SO fast, this Thai-style ground turkey with green beans is a super easy and delicious weeknight meal!

I love simple and tasty dinners, and this one has become a huge family favorite! P.S. It makes fantastic lunch leftovers, too.

This recipe is as simple as:

  1. browning ground turkey or ground chicken
  2. adding the sauce and green beans
  3. cooking for a few minutes until the beans are crisp-tender
  4. stirring in the basil
  5. serving and devouring

It is tasty served over rice with flatbread or naan bread, but it is extremely delish served sans carbs (never thought I’d say that, since I love me some carbs).

If serving with rice, start the rice cooking before embarking on this recipe. This meal comes together so quickly that you’ll easily be waiting on the rice to finish cooking if you don’t begin with the end in mind.

The Flavor is in the Sauce

The sauce for this Thai-style ground turkey and green beans is loaded with flavor. A little sweet, a little salty, a little spicy.

  • oyster or hoisin sauce
  • broth
  • soy sauce
  • chili garlic sauce
  • tiny bit of brown sugar

The heat level can be largely moderated by how much chili garlic sauce you add. As written, it’s on the mild end of spicy, so add more or less chili garlic sauce depending on how spicy you like things.

Thai Basil vs Sweet Basil

If you can find Thai basil, it is exceptional here. (I usually grow it in my minimalist garden every year, just for recipes like this.) It adds distinctive earthy, anise flavored notes that compliment the simple ground meat and green beans perfectly.

Regular, sweet basil (like the kind used in pesto or Italian dishes) can be subbed for the Thai basil. The flavor will be a bit different – less pungent and more herbal and ctirusy – but still delicious.

Either way, fresh basil really does elevate this dish to something special.

The finished dish isn’t overly saucy, but wow, that sauce definitely packs a major flavor punch. I think more sauce could easily overpower the other ingredients (and make everything too salty), but you could try doubling the sauce if you want more of it.

We’ve been eating this meal on repeat. And I have been hoarding the leftovers, not even going to lie about that. BEST LUNCH.

I’m not sure why everyone insists they still need to eat dinner in the summer months when it’s a million degrees and dinnertime is weird and I want a break from all things related to cooking dinner (be aware, I still want to EAT dinner, but I doth not want to COOK dinner).

Thank goodness for meals like this. It checks all the boxes: fast, easy, healthful and delicious. And because it is on the table in 30 minutes and requires very little brain power, my will to live can continue on until the next dinnertime comes around.

Thai-Style Ground Turkey and Green Beans {20-Minute Meal}

  • ¼ cup chicken broth
  • ¼ cup oyster or hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground turkey or ground chicken
  • 12 to 16 ounces fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • ½ cup fresh Thai or sweet basil, chopped or torn into small pieces

Prevent your screen from going dark

  • In a small bowl or liquid measuring cup, whisk together the broth, oyster or hoisin sauce, soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, and brown sugar. Set aside.

  • In a 12-inch skillet set over medium heat, add the ground turkey with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook, breaking the meat into small pieces, until no longer pink, 5 to 6 minutes. Off the heat, drain excess grease.

  • Return the skillet to medium heat. Whisk the sauce to recombine and add to the skillet. Give the meat and sauce a quick stir.

  • Add the green beans. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the beans are crisp-tender (add additional time for more tender green beans).

  • Add the basil. Give everything a good stir to bring the sauce up from the bottom of the pan. Serve immediately. It is delicious on its own or served over hot, cooked rice with flatbread or naan.

Rice: if serving over rice, start the rice cooking before beginning the recipe.
Sauce: the finished dish isn’t overly saucy, but the sauce definitely packs a major flavor punch. More sauce could easily over power the other ingredients (and make everything too salty), but you could try doubling the sauce if you want more of it.
